Japan’s innovative Axelspace Corporation is making waves in the satellite industry with an ambitious plan to launch seven next-generation Earth observation (EO) microsatellites by 2026. The new satellites, dubbed GRUS-3, will elevate Axelspace's capabilities, allowing for broader and more frequent surveillance of our planet. Building on Success: The GRUS-1 Legacy

Currently, Axelspace operates a successful fleet of five GRUS-1 microsatellites, which provide essential services to over 30 countries. The GRUS-3 initiative is set to enhance this legacy, enabling daily imaging of select locations at the same time and spot under optimal sunlight conditions, thanks to a sun-synchronous orbit positioned at 585 km above Earth.

Massive Data Capture and Advanced Technology

Each GRUS-3 satellite boasts an impressive swath width of 28.3 km, with a capacity to capture up to 2.3 million square kilometers daily across all seven satellites. Featuring a spatial resolution of 2.2 meters, the GRUS-3 isn’t just about capturing stunning images; it also includes cutting-edge sensors for monitoring everything from plant health to coastal ecosystems.

The Road Ahead: Launch Plans and Technology Verification

The journey toward realizing this grand vision begins with the launch of GRUS-3a, a test microsatellite scheduled for no earlier than June 2025. This initial launch will help validate the performance and functions of the GRUS-3 design across various missions.
