Ang Mo Kio GRC Set for Intense Three-Way Contest

SINGAPORE – The upcoming General Elections in 2025 are heating up as Ang Mo Kio GRC prepares for an electrifying three-way battle. Despite efforts to unify, two opposition parties have found themselves in a standoff, both determined to take on the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).

Andy Zhu, secretary-general of the Singapore United Party (SUP), stands firmly by his party's decision to contest Ang Mo Kio, expressing no intention to back down even with the looming presence of the People’s Power Party (PPP). Led by treasurer William Lim, the PPP has made it clear that they too will field a team in this critical ward.

A Failed Negotiation: SUP vs. PPP

In a recent walkabout on April 10, Mr. Zhu revealed that discussions with PPP's Goh Meng Seng aimed at reaching a compromise fell flat. Mr. Zhu recounted, "I spoke with him, and he promised to take our proposal back for consideration... Our hope is that PPP will withdraw from this contest."

Mr. Goh confirmed that while talks occurred, no viable resolution has been reached, keeping the electoral stakes high. Meanwhile, the PPP is eyeing competition in Tampines GRC against other established parties like the Workers’ Party and National Solidarity Party.

The Coalition: A United Front for Opposition?

SUP is part of an informal alliance known as The Coalition, formed just last October, which includes the National Solidarity Party (NSP), Red Dot United (RDU), and the Singapore People's Party (SPP). This means that Ang Mo Kio GRC is not just a battleground for the PAP; it represents a pivotal point for opposition unity.

PAP's Stronghold and Community Engagement Efforts

The PAP team, led by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, previously secured a massive 71.91% of the votes in the last election against the Reform Party (RP). Several SUP members, including Mr. Zhu, previously ran under the RP banner in 2020, capturing 28.09% of the votes.

Since its inception, SUP has actively engaged with Ang Mo Kio residents through house visits and community outreach at local markets. Their initiatives include distributing food during Ramadan and mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year, demonstrating their commitment to local concerns.

A Commitment to Residents and Key Issues

Mr. Zhu expressed confidence in his party's mission to represent the residents and voiced his commitment to Ang Mo Kio, even investing in election materials. "Our slogan, 'Moving forward, together,' epitomizes solidarity with the community," he stated, setting the stage for an ambitious campaign.

Looking ahead, SUP's manifesto is rooted in community feedback, addressing pressing concerns like soaring living costs and proposing the removal of the Goods and Services Tax on essential items. With anxiety about housing and healthcare bills rising, Mr. Zhu believes their focus on these issues will resonate with voters.

The Challenge Ahead: Fending Off Competition

As the rivalry intensifies, Mr. Zhu acknowledged, "Our main challenge is navigating the campaign against both the PAP and the PPP. We need to amplify our candidates and their offerings to residents." With the election drawing near, the pressure is on for all parties to solidify their positions and make their agendas clear.
