SINGAPORE – A wave of online scams is hitting Singaporean taxpayers
with fraudsters posing as the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) and sending out deceptive emails. These emails claim that there is a routine tax review for the Year of Assessment 2024, urging recipients to click on dangerous links to confirm their tax submissions.
IRAS Warning on Phishing Emails
The IRAS issued a crucial warning on March 19, advising anyone who receives such emails to refrain from clicking links or providing personal information. The emails often threaten penalties or account suspensions for those who do not respond within five working days, creating a false sense of urgency to manipulate unsuspecting taxpayers.
Sophisticated Scammers
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics, taking advantage of current tax periods to target individuals. These emails typically request sensitive information, such as personal data, credit card information, or bank account details, under the guise of tax validation.
