In a significant announcement on March 23, 2025, Chee Soon Juan, the leader of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), revealed that he will contest the newly formed Sembawang West Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election. This decision comes after a recent reshaping of Singapore's electoral landscape by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee, which unveiled its report on March 11.
Addressing supporters during a walkabout in Woodlands, Dr. Chee reflected on the emotional weight of leaving Bukit Batok—his constituency for the previous elections—in pursuit of new opportunities. "It is with a heavy heart that I leave Bukit Batok. You don't invest ten years into a community without feeling a significant void when it's taken from you," he stated, underscoring the connection he has developed with local residents.
In addition to his move, SDP's chairperson, Professor Paul Tambyah, will be contesting in the Bukit Panjang SMC again, where he previously stood during the 2020 election. This strategic shift underscores the SDP's tactical realignment in response to the electoral changes, marking a renewed focus on the northern regions of Singapore.
The new Sembawang West SMC boasts an electorate of approximately 24,153 voters, and Dr. Chee has emphasized the party's commitment to actively engaging with constituents moving forward. He also hinted that the SDP plans to field a team for the Sembawang GRC, currently represented by a five-member team from the ruling People's Action Party, including notable figures like Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.
Highlighting his party's historical ties to Sembawang, Dr. Chee remarked, "This isn't new for us; we've campaigned in this area in the past. It's like returning to familiar ground." The party’s outreach strategy includes an ambitious flyer distribution effort aimed at informing residents about his candidacy and generating early engagement.
Anticipating potential competition, Dr. Chee acknowledged the National Solidarity Party's (NSP) interest in contesting Sembawang West and expressed his willingness to collaborate with other opposition parties to ensure a well-coordinated approach in the elections. "We are always in touch with fellow opposition parties to discuss and strategize," he assured.
In terms of grassroots efforts, both Dr. Chee and Professor Tambyah are committed to extensive canvassing, with plans for house visits in the days leading up to the election. Professor Tambyah noted that he has already connected with a significant number of residents in Bukit Panjang, fostering community relationships that he hopes will translate into electoral support.
As SDP prepares for what it describes as a rebuilding phase in Singapore's political landscape, the focus on Sembawang West SMC is shaping up to be a critical part of their strategy to reclaim influence in Singapore. With the election drawing nearer, both leaders are keenly aware that their engagement with the electorate could make all the difference in the upcoming electoral battle.
