Cholera Outbreak Overview

As of January 15, 2025, Angola is grappling with a concerning cholera outbreak, with emerging reports indicating that three out of 21 provinces are currently affected, namely Bengo, Luanda, and Icolo e Bengo. The situation has escalated rapidly, with 332 cases reported, including 66 confirmed cases and a heartbreaking tally of 20 deaths. Notably, Luanda Province has been hit the hardest, accounting for 259 of the cases.

Demographics of the Affected Population

The demographics reveal that children and women are particularly vulnerable, with the highest infection rates in the 0-9 age group, which represents 32.2% of total cases. Alarmingly, this group has also suffered the highest fatalities, with 10 deaths registered among children aged 0-9. Overall, women constitute 52.4% of the infected population, highlighting the need for targeted health interventions.

Official Declaration and Response

The outbreak was officially declared by the Ministry of Health on January 7, 2025, following the confirmation of the first case. A swift response was initiated, with the Minister of Health convening the first National Coordination Technical Meeting on January 8. This crucial meeting brought together directors from national, municipal, and general hospitals, as well as key partners in the health sector. The Technical Commission subsequently activated the National Plan for Cholera Response, mobilizing essential resources and health workers to combat the epidemic.

Community Awareness and Public Health Measures

In light of the outbreak, it is imperative for communities to stay informed and vigilant. The Cacuaco Municipality in Luanda Province, where the first case was registered, is a densely populated suburban area with approximately 1.2 million residents. Public health officials are urging residents to maintain proper sanitation practices and seek immediate medical attention if cholera symptoms arise.
