Close Encounter Ahead: Get Ready for Asteroid 2024 WY70's Brush with Earth!
A potentially hazardous asteroid, named 2024 WY70, is set to make a notable approach to our planet on January 18, 2025. While the asteroid will come within a distance of approximately 6.3 million kilometers from Earth, it's important to note that this encounter poses no threat to our safety.
Recent images of 2024 WY70 have been captured using the "Elena" robotic telescope, a sophisticated unit operated by the Virtual Telescope Project. These images were obtained through an impressive technique that's comprised of five 120-second exposures, which allow the asteroid to appear as a sharp dot in the sky whilst the stars fade into trails due to their vast distance. When these images were taken, the asteroid was still a significant 26 million kilometers away and continuing its journey towards us.
Measuring around 320 meters in diameter, 2024 WY70 will reach its closest point to Earth at 22:42 UTC on January 18, 2025. To put this distance into perspective, it's about 16.5 times farther away than the Moon!
Astronomers and space enthusiasts alike are eager for this encounter, as such events provide valuable opportunities for observation and study. Monitoring these asteroids helps scientists better understand their compositions and orbits, which is crucial for planetary defense efforts.
Stay tuned for more updates on this close encounter and check out the Virtual Telescope Project for stunning imagery and real-time tracking of asteroids and other celestial events.
