Liverpool's forward Diogo Jota is facing an uphill battle, and how the next few months unfold could significantly impact the future of the Reds' attacking line under the new management of Arne Slot.

Once hailed as a game-changer, Jota’s current form raises concerns about his role in the squad going forward. The Portuguese international burst onto the scene after transferring from Wolves in September 2020, establishing himself as a key player capable of scoring early in matches. Notably, he netted the first goal for Liverpool under Slot in their season opener against Ipswich Town in August.

Despite a promising start to the current season, where he began 10 out of the first 11 games, Jota’s trajectory took a concerning turn following a nasty upper body injury sustained against Chelsea in October. This injury coincided with a dip in Liverpool's overall attacking capability, particularly through the center.

Jota returned from injury in December, contributing important moments as a substitute, yet his starting performances have lacked the necessary impact. He faced setbacks from recurring muscle issues, resulting in below-par displays against top teams like Paris Saint-Germain, along with a disappointing appearance in the League Cup final against Newcastle.

Recent international outings offered a slight reprieve, with Jota assisting in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victory over Denmark. However, his struggles in front of goal for Liverpool are alarming, as he has gone 10 matches without scoring, despite being reshaped into a more centralized attacking role.

“It's been a difficult season for me personally,” Jota reflected. “I know these last couple of months are crucial, and I'm determined to find my best form again. Playing regularly is key to that.

At age 28, it appears the toll of injuries might finally be catching up with Jota. His previous season was marred with multiple injuries, yet he managed to score 15 goals, highlighting what Liverpool misses when he’s unavailable. This past season, a hamstring injury during pre-season, followed by a serious calf injury that sidelined him during the World Cup, hindered his scoring capabilities, landing him over a year without a goal for Liverpool.

Jota's high-octane style of play, which thrived under Jürgen Klopp’s management, seems to have taken its toll on his physical condition. This raises questions about whether his playing style fits Slot’s strategic vision for the team moving forward.

As Liverpool assesses its roster, other forwards in the squad face uncertainty as well. Transfers rumors swirl around Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, both linked to potential moves to the Saudi Pro League or beyond, while Federico Chiesa’s situation becomes precarious due to insufficient playing time this season, and Mohamed Salah’s contract situation adds further concern.

With these questions looming, Liverpool is actively exploring options in the transfer market for a new number nine, challenging the current forwards, including Jota, to establish their places in the team as they seek to redefine their attacking approach.
