Direct Flights from Singapore to Tasmania on the Horizon?
SINGAPORE – Exciting travel prospects are in store for Singaporeans looking to explore Tasmania. In a significant update, Tasmania's Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced ongoing talks with national carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Cathay Pacific to potentially kick off non-stop flights to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania.
Premier Rockliff shared the optimism during an interview on November 18, emphasizing the stature of these airlines in the aviation world. "These are two world-leading air carriers, and we’d love to see them flying direct to Hobart,” he remarked when announcing the talks via a local news outlet and on social media.
Currently, travelers from Singapore must navigate through domestic flights or ferries from Melbourne to reach Hobart—a journey that could soon take a more convenient turn. However, SIA has refrained from confirming specific plans, mentioning only that they continuously assess their routes and destination offerings. "Should there be any new additions to our network, we will announce them publicly at the appropriate time," stated a spokesperson for the airline.
The groundwork for these non-stop flights is set to be laid by an A$130 million (approximately SGD 113 million) enhancement of Hobart Airport's runway, scheduled for completion by mid-2025. This upgrade will enable the airport to accommodate long-haul flights from larger wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Travel industry experts believe that introducing direct flights could substantially boost interest among Singaporean travelers, who often seek new destinations in Australia after visiting popular cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Alicia Seah, co-founder of the online travel platform 3Playtopia, emphasized the allure of Tasmania's stunning landscapes and outdoor activities, which are increasingly appealing to tourists. Meanwhile, Jeremiah Wong, Assistant Director of Marketing Communications at Chan Brothers Travel, stated that Tasmania is emerging as a favored choice for those in search of a peaceful retreat.
However, there are challenges to consider. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie highlighted that while Tasmania is an attractive destination, its market is relatively small, resulting in seasonal passenger traffic. This situation poses difficulties for airlines to maintain steady flight operations without robust marketing and support. Furthermore, Sobie suggested that a low-cost airline, such as Scoot, might ultimately launch this route instead of SIA, given the likely limited premium traffic.
Despite the uncertainties, the enthusiasm for expanding routes is palpable. Changi Airport Group expressed its support for airlines exploring new destinations, which could enhance connectivity and travel options for passengers. Notably, over 4.7 million travelers journeyed between Singapore and Australia in the first nine months of 2024, solidifying Australia as Changi Airport's fourth-largest market.
As these discussions progress, travelers across Singapore eagerly await further developments that could pave the way for direct flights to Australia’s captivating island paradise. Stay tuned!
