Prepare for a celestial spectacle

The Geminid meteor shower returns on December 13-14, 2024! While this year’s phenomenon will be slightly overshadowed by the nearly full Moon, it still promises to be an unforgettable experience.

The Power of the Geminids

The Geminid meteor shower is hailed as the most powerful meteor display of the year, producing up to 100 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. Unfortunately, the bright light of the full Moon will likely limit visibility, allowing only the brightest shooting stars to shine through. Expect to see around 15 meteors per hour instead, but don’t let that deter you—these shooting stars can still be mesmerizing!

What Makes the Geminids Unique?

What makes the Geminids truly unique is their origin. Unlike most meteor showers that come from comets, the Geminids are spawned from an asteroid named (3200) Phaethon. This unusual source gives them a special place in the world of astronomy, as they are one of only two meteor showers that originate from an asteroid.
