Earth is about to say goodbye to its temporary mini-moon, asteroid 2024 PT5, which was captured by our planet's gravity on September 29. This celestial wanderer will zoom off into space on November 25, marking the end of its brief stay. Discovered on August 7 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), asteroid 2024 PT5 hails from the Arjuna asteroid belt, an area known for containing space rocks with orbits similar to Earth's orbit around the Sun, roughly 93 million miles away.

When to Expect the Next Mini-Moon

So, when can we expect Earth to host another mini-moon? Hold onto your telescopes! The next mini-moon is nearly 27 years away, as asteroid 2022 NX1 is predicted to make its return in 2051. This space rock has made history before—it was first captured by Earth’s gravity in 1981 and returned again in 2022, although it did not complete a full orbit during either visit.

The researchers, Carlos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, who initially spotted 2024 PT5, detailed their findings in a paper published in Research Notes of the AAS. Their research reveals not only the characteristics of this recent mini-moon but also sheds light on past mini-moons that have made fleeting trips around Earth.

Historical Context of Mini-Moons

Asteroids regularly zip past our planet, and when gravity grabs hold, it creates an exceptionally rare cosmic phenomenon. In addition to 2024 PT5 and 2022 NX1, Earth has played host to several other mini-moons. For instance, in February 1992, asteroid 1991 VG had a brief encounter with Earth, while asteroid 2006 RH120 captured attention by remaining gravitationally bound to our planet for a whole year—from July 2006 to July 2007.

Another notable guest was asteroid 2020 CD3, which entered Earth’s orbit and stayed for several years before escaping in May 2020.
