**SINGAPORE:** In a significant decision, the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) has decided to abandon a controversial proposal to close preschools on Mondays following public holidays that fall on Saturdays. This reversal comes after a strong reaction from parents, who voiced extensive concerns about how such closures would disrupt their childcare arrangements.

The proposal was initially put forth as part of a survey launched on April 1, which received an overwhelming response of over 30,000 submissions from the public. While the majority of preschool operators supported the idea, around two-thirds of parents expressed strong opposition, mainly due to anxiety over their ability to manage caregiving responsibilities.

In an official notice sent to parents, ECDA stated, “Given the feedback received, we will not proceed with this proposal and will focus on other initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being and working conditions of early childhood educators.” The agency recognized that the proposed closures could complicate existing caregiving arrangements, which are already challenging for many families.

The idea of aligning preschool closure rules with those of mainstream schools was originally advocated by early childhood educators and operators. They argued that this would facilitate better work-life balance for parents who also work in schools and would help educators avoid difficulties with using off-in-lieu days created by manpower issues.

Parents Voice Concerns Over Childcare Disruptions

In interviews with parents, the concerns were palpable. Ms. Rachel Lee, an accountant and mother of a 22-month-old, shared her situation, stating that while she has a domestic helper to assist with childcare, she is acutely aware of the challenges faced by families without additional support. “If we did not have family support, it would be very tough for us, especially with illness disruptions,” she said, highlighting that many parents already struggle with sick leave when their children cannot attend preschool.

Other parents echoed the sentiment. Mr. Tan Jian Rong, father of three, conveyed his worries about loss of leave. “Parents need to save their leave days for essential events. Closing preschools on Monday would be extremely impactful for working parents,” he asserted.

On the other hand, some families, like that of Ms. Felicia Ang, took a more favorable view of the proposed closures. Without a domestic helper but with the support of extended family, Ms. Ang expressed that they could manage the situation. “Teachers deserve a break too; their job is demanding,” she noted, indicating the need for work-life balance among preschool staff as well.

Moving Forward: Reassessing Support for Educators

With the proposal now scrapped, ECDA plans to refocus its efforts on improving conditions for early childhood educators, a field known for its challenges and high turnover rates. Many teachers are deeply passionate about their roles but often leave the profession due to exhaustion and lack of support.
