PSP Assembles Its A-Team for 2025 Elections

In a bold move, the opposition Progress Singapore Party (PSP) is making headlines as it prepares to field its top three leaders for the newly formed West Coast-Jurong West GRC in the upcoming 2025 General Election.

This dynamic trio - PSP chairman Tan Cheng Bock, 84, party chief Leong Mun Wai, 65, and vice-chair Hazel Poa, 54 - aren't newcomers to the battlefield. They narrowly lost in this constituency during the last election, garnering an impressive 48.32% of the vote against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which secured 51.68%.

New Faces Join the Line-Up!

Adding to the excitement, PSP is introducing new contenders Sumarleki Amjah, 53, and Sani Ismail, 49, both of whom have been actively engaging with residents in the run-up to the polls. Sani is an in-house legal counsel, while Sumarleki, a former volunteer for the Workers' Party, heads packaged food operations at Del Monte Pacific. Plus, we have Stephanie Tan, 37, a homemaker with a law degree, who will challenge the incumbent Labour MP Patrick Tay in Pioneer SMC.

A Campaign Built on Community Engagement

Unveiling their candidates at Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre, Dr. Tan emphasized the party's commitment to improving local facilities, creating jobs, and fostering a better living environment for residents.

Despite the uphill battle ahead, Mr. Leong stated, 'We want to express our gratitude to the West Coast GRC residents for their support during the last election by contesting together again.' He hinted that this might be Dr. Tan's last campaign.

A Rematch on the Horizon!

Setting the stage for an exhilarating rematch, PSP will face off against a refreshed PAP slate led by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee. The PAP will also introduce newcomers orthopaedic surgeon Hamid Razak, 39, and lawyer Cassandra Lee, 33, alongside seasoned members like Shawn Huang and Ang Wei Neng.

Changes to the Electoral Landscape

Recent adjustments to the electoral boundaries mean the West Coast-Jurong West GRC will now encompass 158,581 voters, a significant increase from the previous 146,089 in West Coast GRC. Key areas like HarbourFront and Sentosa will shift to Radin Mas SMC, while parts of Dover and Telok Blangah transfer to Tanjong Pagar GRC.

With the PSP’s remarkable performance in 2020 leading to Non-Constituency MP seats for Leong and Poa, the stage is set for an electrifying contest on May 3.

Anticipation Builds for a Thrilling Election!

As campaigning kicks into high gear, all eyes will be on the West Coast-Jurong West GRC for what promises to be one of the most closely watched rematches in Singapore’s election history!
