EU Warns Trump: Respect Greenland’s Sovereignty or Face Consequences!
In a decisive statement on Thursday, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the necessity to uphold Greenland's sovereignty in light of alarming comments from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. During a recent news conference, Trump unsettlingly hinted at the possibility of military action to claim the mineral-rich Arctic island, provoking a wave of concerns among European leaders.
“Greenland is part of Denmark,” Kallas remarked firmly while speaking with journalists in Brussels. “We have to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland.” This statement came after Trump expressed ambitions not only towards Greenland but also the Panama Canal, areas he suggested could fall under U.S. control.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is known for its abundant natural resources, including valuable minerals and oil reserves. As its push for greater independence gains momentum, the situation has become even more delicate. Kallas noted she had reached out to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen following Trump’s provocative remarks. “She assured me that the Danish-American relations remain constructive,” Kallas stated, underscoring the diplomatic efforts to quell any rising tensions.
In a show of unity, Denmark’s foreign minister declared that Copenhagen is “open to discussions” with the U.S. about Arctic interests, pointing to a collaborative spirit despite the controversy. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz articulated broader European apprehensions, stating, “Borders must not be moved by force. This principle applies to every nation.” He emphasized the importance of European solidarity in the face of aggressive rhetoric from across the Atlantic.
As Trump’s inauguration looms on January 20, Europe braces for a turbulent relationship with the U.S. Will the new administration heed warnings from its allies? As global dynamics shift, the Arctic, crucial for security and climate change strategies, now stands at the center of renewed geopolitical tensions.
