SINGAPORE – Major changes are on the horizon for Nee Soon GRC as anchor minister K. Shanmugam hints at the introduction of four new candidates ahead of the 2025 General Election. Mark your calendars for April 21, when these fresh faces will be unveiled at a press conference.

Among the newcomers is the dynamic Syed Harun Alhabsyi, a former Nominated Member of Parliament, alongside three promising individuals: Jackson Lam, a pest control and cleaning mogul; Lee Hui Ying, who contributes to the Temasek Foundation; and Goh Hanyan, previously a director at the Ministry of Digital Development and Information.

Shanmugam, who also serves as Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs and Law, shared insights during a recent visit to Rainforest Wild Asia, emphasizing that these candidates have already begun engaging with the community.

"Syed Harun has been actively visiting local mosques, and Jackson, my former branch secretary, has been seen working the ground," he noted, hinting strongly that these candidates are not just placeholders but serious contenders.

Current MPs Louis Ng, Carrie Tan, and Derrick Goh were on hand during the visit, with Ng well-known for his advocacy in animal welfare and his vocal presence in Parliament since his election in 2015. Tan, the founder of the charity Daughters Of Tomorrow, and Goh, who recently climbed the corporate ladder at DBS Bank, joined the ranks in 2020.

When pressed on whether Ng, Tan, and Goh would contend again, Shanmugam promised that more information would be forthcoming, leaving many to speculate on their political futures.

If all three choose to step down, Shanmugam, as the only remaining member of the current team, will shoulder the mantle of leadership in the upcoming election, following the announcement by Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim that he will transition to the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC.

In the previous election, held in 2020, the PAP team successfully defended Nee Soon GRC with a solid 61.9% of the vote against opposition from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP). This time around, they will face a new challenge from the opposition party Red Dot United, which has confirmed its intent to contest in Nee Soon GRC.

Stay tuned as this dynamic election landscape unfolds! Who will emerge victorious in the battle for Nee Soon GRC?
