In a thrilling turn of events, the modern rendition of the iconic Citroën SM, showcased by France’s DS brand last September, may be more than just a concept! In a recent interview with Top Gear, Thierry Metroz, DS's head of design, revealed that the company is actively exploring options to bring the stunning DS SM Tribute into limited production, potentially utilizing the expertise of a coachbuilder to make it a reality.
What’s particularly intriguing is that this reinvented coupe is built upon the foundation of the 2024 Maserati GranTurismo, a fellow member of the Stellantis family. It's worth noting that the original Citroën SM, which made its debut in 1970, also incorporated Maserati components, including its robust V-6 engine. This historical connection has sparked interest in the modern version adopting Maserati's advanced twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine, capable of producing an impressive 550 horsepower, as seen in the GranTurismo.
Metroz pointed out an interesting trend in luxury vehicle preferences, suggesting that buyers of high-end cars—often in the million-euro range—may not find electric vehicles appealing. "When you're buying a million euro car, you don’t want an EV," he stated, signaling a preference for traditional powertrains among affluent consumers.
Both the former Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares, and current DS CEO, Olivier Francois, are reportedly on board with exploring the production of the DS SM Tribute, provided it proves to be financially viable. This reveals a strong backing from the top, indicating that the project could move beyond the drawing board if the numbers add up.
Even if the DS SM Tribute ultimately does not make it to production, the design elements showcased in this concept are expected to influence upcoming DS models. The company has described this venture not only as a homage to the original SM but also as a significant exercise in advancing their design language ahead of a slew of new models anticipated by the end of the decade.
Stay tuned—this could be the legendary revival we've all been waiting for!
