Exciting Update: Android May Soon Launch Google Wallet with a Simple Button Press!
In a game-changing move for Android users, Google is reportedly developing a new shortcut that will enable you to launch Google Wallet with just a double press of your power button. This feature, found in the latest Android beta and developer preview builds, could streamline the way users access their digital wallets.
As it stands, double pressing the power button on most Android devices currently launches the camera app, a feature designed to help users quickly capture fleeting moments. While some manufacturers allow customization of this gesture, Google Pixel device owners have been left without that option—until now.
With the revelation of a new configuration named `config_walletDoubleTapPowerGestureEnabled` hidden within the second developer preview of Android 16, it appears that users may soon have the ability to launch their default wallet app—presumably Google Wallet—by simply tapping the power button twice. Android 15 already introduced the flexibility of customizing the default wallet app, meaning this new shortcut will allow users to quickly access their preferred wallet with ease.
Interestingly, while the code found in the latest update doesn't divulge how Google intends to execute this feature, it raises questions about whether it will be integrated under the existing system settings or as an entirely new option. Speculation remains about whether this gesture is meant solely for smartphones or could also be applicable to Wear OS devices, which already utilize a similar double-tap feature for launching wallet apps.
With digital payments becoming increasingly central to our everyday transactions, this new feature could enhance user convenience and accessibility. Imagine being able to pay for purchases in seconds, simply by tapping your phone’s power button!
