Exciting Updates on UOB$ Merchants: December 2024 Revealed!

For UOB cardholders, UOB$ merchants have historically been a sticky point. Once known as SMART$ merchants, they presented a dilemma for users trying to maximize their rewards. While UOB$ offers a cashback alternative, it's crucial to differentiate it from UNI$, another point-based currency. UOB$ provides a rebate that can be used towards the next bill with the same merchant, while UNI$ can be transformed into airline miles, making it potentially more valuable for frequent travelers.
A Game-Changing Shift
On November 1, 2024, the game changed dramatically for UOB cardholders. UOB updated its policies, allowing for the fantastic opportunity of “double dipping” on both UNI$ and UOB$ at UOB$ merchants. This means cardholders can now reap the benefits of both cashback and points simultaneously, transforming what was once seen as a hassle into a golden opportunity for earning rewards.
For instance, when a customer makes a purchase at a UOB$ merchant like Miniso, they now earn both UOB$ and UNI$ on their transaction. A S$20 spend could yield 40 UNI$ (equivalent to 80 airline miles) alongside 0.80 UOB$ to use on future purchases with Miniso.
Tracking Your UOB$ Rewards
Tracking your UOB$ has become a straightforward process through the UOB TMRW app. Simply navigate to Rewards+ > My Rewards > UOB$ to monitor your earned rewards and their expiration. This user-friendly feature ensures that you stay updated on your cashback gains effortlessly.
Most UOB cards are eligible for the UOB$ program, with a few exceptions such as the UOB PRVI Miles AMEX and a few other specific card types.
What’s New This Month?
As we step into December 2024, it's important to note that no new merchants have joined the UOB$ program this month. However, there are significant changes to be aware of, as some merchants have exited the program. Eliminated this month are:
- **Dining:** Yole (10% rebate) - **Dining:** Tampines 1 outlet of Crystal Jade (3% rebate) - **Retail:** VivoCity outlet of JD Sports (5% rebate with a minimum spend of S$100)

Final Thoughts
With the new ability to earn both UOB$ and UNI$, UOB$ merchants have become a sought-after asset for cardholders. However, the recent trimming of merchant partners raises concerns about the program's robustness. Following a mass exit of popular stores last month, including names like Cold Storage and Starbucks, the removal of Yole and others in December adds to that worry.
As we move into 2025, there’s hope that UOB will bolster the list of UOB$ merchants, providing cardholders with even more opportunities to maximize their rewards. For those who love getting the most value from their spending, this is indeed a space to watch closely!
