Gavi, IFRC, and UNICEF Unite to Tackle Health Crisis in Palestine with $20 Million Initiative

2024-10-04

In a significant response to the urgent healthcare crisis in Palestine, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has announced a remarkable allocation of over $20 million aimed at immunizing children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Palestinian populations in Lebanon. This funding is poised to deliver critical vaccines and enhance access to essential services amid ongoing conflicts that have severely compromised healthcare systems in the region.

The funds will be utilized through UNICEF and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), which will support not only routine vaccinations but also emergency responses that include nutritional assistance and rehabilitation of healthcare infrastructure. This initiative comes as health conditions further deteriorate, leaving vulnerable communities at risk of disease outbreaks.

Dr. Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, emphasized the urgency of this undertaking, stating, "Gavi is committed to helping address the urgent health and humanitarian crisis in Palestine and for the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon." She praised the unwavering efforts of on-ground partners delivering essential health services under difficult circumstances, reiterating a collective responsibility to provide children's basic right to health during traumatic times.

Of the $20 million commitment, approximately $2 million will be allocated via UNICEF for vaccine delivery and the restoration of critical infrastructures, like cold chain systems necessary for vaccine storage. The efforts will also include solarizing five healthcare facilities to improve maternal and newborn care alongside other integral health services. An additional $11.8 million will fund the procurement of routine vaccines and technical assistance through UNICEF under Gavi’s Fragility, Emergencies, and Displaced Populations Policy.

Highlighting the plight of children in these conflict-affected zones, Adele Khodr, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated, "Immunization is often their last line of defense. This funding is not just an investment in vaccines – it’s an investment in their lives." With UNICEF’s ongoing efforts, over 1.65 million doses of polio vaccines have been administered in response to recent outbreaks in Gaza.

The remaining $7.3 million is managed by IFRC and will focus on reaching 'zero-dose' children – those who have never received routine vaccinations – along with providing critical vaccines to those who missed their immunizations due to the chaotic environment. Additionally, the IFRC will distribute nutritional supplements and food parcels to families coping with malnutrition, complementing the health-focused interventions.

IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain highlighted the dedication of volunteers risking their safety to deliver life-saving help: "Every child deserves a chance at a healthy life. The trust families place in these vaccines showcases the critical role of humanitarian work amid hardship."

Palestine has exhibited resilience in maintaining high immunization rates historically, boasting an impressive 99.43% coverage for the DTP vaccine in 2022. However, ongoing conflict has led to devastating impacts on infrastructure, water supply, and healthcare accessibility, leaving children particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases. Gavi remains optimistic, citing the recent successes of vaccination campaigns and a commitment from all partners to ensure every child’s right to vital vaccinations is upheld.

As the situation in Palestine evolves, this collaborative effort between Gavi, UNICEF, and IFRC symbolizes a glimmer of hope for a healthier future amidst adversity. The global health community must rally to support these initiatives and ensure that no child is left behind in the pursuit of immunization and healthcare access.
