SINGAPORE — As the 2025 General Election looms, Edwin Tong, the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate for East Coast GRC, has acknowledged his opponent, Yee Jenn Jong of the Workers' Party (WP), as a "seasoned operator," yet he believes that his team’s strong foundation will be instrumental in the race ahead.
Tong, who serves as Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, highlighted the extensive groundwork laid by previous PAP teams, stating, "We’re not starting from scratch. We’re building on years of dedicated service to the constituents." He recognized that while this election will be challenging—particularly against the WP, which he respects for its credibility and experience—the PAP is well-prepared with a diverse team.
"East Coast has historically been a tough seat for us, and I expect nothing less in this election," he noted. Reassuring supporters, he mentioned, "I’ve known Jenn Jong for quite some time, and I anticipate a robust contest. That’s why I consider this my toughest election yet."
**A Dynamic New Team**
Tong formally introduced his team at a PAP event, consisting of Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How, Jessica Tan, and newcomers Hazlina Abdul Halim and Dinesh Vasu Dash. With Tong's fresh perspective as a new addition to East Coast and the diverse experiences of his slate, he believes they can effectively address local issues.
"This diverse lineup of candidates brings together our collective experiences, and I am confident it will serve us well in addressing the needs of East Coast residents," said Tong.
**Building on Past Achievements**
Emphasizing continuity, he remarked that it's essential to build on the accomplishments of the retiring members of the previous slate. Tong’s commitment reflects a desire to connect with the constituents deeply and foster a community-oriented approach.
"We aim to focus on the ageing population and create more opportunities for youth in East Coast," he stated. His approach promises to blend experience with fresh initiatives, enhancing the living environment and social programs for residents.
**Local Champions Rising**
Introducing Hazlina Abdul Halim, a former journalist with 15 years of experience, Tong highlighted her advocacy for women’s rights and social issues. "Her background empowers her to connect with residents on crucial topics affecting their lives," he said.
Meanwhile, Dinesh Vasu Dash emphasized his focus on providing support to seniors and families. Drawing from personal experiences, he expressed his commitment to elevating minority communities and advocating for better integration.
"As someone who understands the struggles of underrepresented groups, I'm dedicated to being their voice in Parliament," Dinesh asserted.
**The Stakes Are High**
With the political landscape changing dynamically, the stakes in East Coast GRC have never been higher. With key players like Tong leading a revamped team and seasoned candidates like Yee Jenn Jong in the lineup, voters can expect an engaging and closely contested election ahead.
