SINGAPORE:

The anticipation is palpable as the Ruling People's Action Party (PAP) introduces three dynamic new faces at a community event in Punggol on Sunday, April 6. The event serves as a significant precursor to the upcoming General Election in 2025, with a focus on engaging the electorate and enhancing grassroots connections.

Among the newcomers is Mr. Goh Pei Ming, who recently stepped down as the Chief of Staff — Joint Staff of the Singapore Armed Forces. Just weeks into his new civilian life, Mr. Goh expressed enthusiasm for his current volunteering efforts in Punggol, where he has begun to immerse himself in local community activities. His prior leadership roles, including chairman of the Kampong Chai Chee Community Club Management Committee since 2021 and vice-chairman of the Citizens' Consultative Committee since 2019, showcase his commitment to public service and leadership.

Joining him is Mr. Foo Cexiang, a former Director of Private and Future Mobility at the Ministry of Transport, who also transitioned into community volunteering just last week. His work has positioned him at the forefront of discussions surrounding transport innovations, which could provide valuable insights as he engages with constituents.

The third new face at the event is Ms. Valerie Lee, the Head of Corporate Affairs for Singapore and Southeast Asia at Sembcorp Industries. Previously seen working the ground in West Coast GRC and East Coast GRC, her diverse background will likely contribute to fresh perspectives on policy and community engagement.

This trio has joined forces with the established Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC team, which includes notable figures like Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information and Health Janil Puthucheary, and Punggol West MP Sun Xueling, among others. Together, they navigate a newly reconfigured constituency that has been divided into two smaller GRCs to accommodate the growing voter base.

The previous team secured 64.16 percent of the votes in their last election, but with the recent electoral boundary changes, they will face new dynamics and challenges within the constituency. Punggol estates have been merged with Punggol West Single Member Constituency (SMC) to form a new four-member Punggol GRC, whereas other districts have combined with East Coast GRC areas, notably the Loyang and Flora estates, to create the new Pasir Ris-Changi GRC.

Mr. Goh shared that he has been shadowing Dr. Puthucheary to better understand the community's needs and intends to follow other seasoned MPs like Ms. Sun and Ms. Yeo to refine his grassroots approach. "I'm in the process of coming over here to help with grassroots work," he stated, emphasizing the importance of community connection and engagement in political service.

As the GE2025 approaches, the introduction of these fresh candidates provides an exciting emblem of change and innovation within the PAP, promising a blend of experienced leadership and new ideas. Stay tuned as we follow their journey in winning the hearts of voters!
