Google Pixel 10 to Feature Cutting-Edge MediaTek Modem for Enhanced Performance and Efficiency!

Google's efforts in the smartphone arena have seen its fair share of challenges, particularly with the modem technology in its Pixel lineup. The initial implementations of Tensor in earlier models, like the Pixel 6, were notably hindered by the Samsung modem, which faced significant issues related to heat generation and signal strength. However, a new report suggests that the upcoming Pixel 10 could mark a pivotal shift in this area by incorporating a modem from MediaTek.

The Pixel 6, the first device to feature Google's proprietary Tensor chip, experienced numerous complaints about overheating and subpar connectivity due to its reliance on a Samsung modem. Subsequent iterations, such as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8, saw improvements with the Tensor G2 and G3 chips, respectively, but the underwhelming modem performance remained a notable drawback. Reports indicate that these overheating issues have been significant enough to drive some consumers to return their devices.

In a bid to rectify these shortcomings for the Pixel 10, it seems Google will not only be shifting away from Samsung for chipset production but also opting for a new modem to ensure a better user experience. According to Android Authority, after considering alternatives such as Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem, Google has chosen to integrate the MediaTek T900. This modem, which is yet to be released, is based on MediaTek's “M85” generation and will reportedly utilize the 3GPP Release 17 5G specifications, also not yet detailed.

While concrete performance metrics for the MediaTek T900 remain unknown, the switch indicates Google's confidence that this new modem will address the issues faced with Samsung’s model. Battery performance is a crucial consideration for Google; internal documents suggest that enhancing battery life has become a priority for the company. The MediaTek modem may provide the efficiency improvements that Google is eager to achieve, even if it might not reach the performance levels seen in Qualcomm's chips.
