Government Listens to Penang Residents

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian federal government is listening closely to concerns raised by Penang residents about the planned construction of a depot for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project on a portion of the iconic Sungai Nibong pesta site.

Prime Minister's Assurances

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed local sentiments during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mutiara Line LRT at the Bandar Sri Pinang LRT station site. He assured residents that discussions will be held with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to explore potential modifications to the project to minimize the impact on this beloved location.

“Penangites have strong emotional ties to their culture and identity, which includes local delicacies like nasi kandar and cherished venues such as the pesta site,” Anwar stated. “While progress like the LRT is essential, we must consider how to balance development with preserving these sentimental values.”

The Chief Minister had earlier announced plans on January 8 to incorporate part of the pesta site for the LRT depot, a proposal currently under consideration by MRT Corp, the project's developer. Residents are especially concerned as the proposal is still at a conceptual stage, ripe for further discussion.

Anwar emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and public interest in the execution of the project. He urged MRT Corp to ensure that the development is carried out efficiently and without any misconduct. Spanning 29.5 kilometers, the Mutiara Line LRT will include 21 strategically placed stations. Key terminus stations at Penang Sentral and KOMTAR will provide pivotal connectivity and are expected to alleviate current traffic congestion. The line is projected to become operational by 2031, enhancing the daily commute for residents across the Penang Strait.
