SINGAPORE – In a remarkable initiative aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among the elderly, seniors in Hong Kah North can now enjoy coffee and tea at an unbeatable price of just 70 cents, provided they opt for sugar-free drinks. This exciting program will take place every Wednesday and Friday, starting from December 20, 2023, and continuing through to mid-2025, across all 12 coffee shops in the constituency.
The initiative was announced by Hong Kah North Member of Parliament, Amy Khor, during a lively gathering at Chang Cheng Mee Wah Coffeeshop, where around 65 seniors were in attendance. This program is specifically designed for individuals aged 60 and above, making it an inclusive effort to encourage senior citizens to adopt healthier habits while socializing.
Dr. Khor, who is also the Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, emphasized the importance of fostering social connections among the elderly. “We want you to be more active and healthier when you meet your friends,” she said. “Our aim is to reduce social isolation while promoting healthier beverage choices.”
In addition to the discounted drinks, the event featured an engaging health education and physical activity session, organized by the Hong Kah North Active Ageing Committee in collaboration with the National University Health System and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. This monthly 'Seniors Tea-Time' session will rotate among the participating coffee shops, making it easier for seniors to access health education and community engagement.
Mr. Soh Chiang Cheng, the owner of Chang Cheng Mee Wah, expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “With the rising incidence of diabetes in Singapore, I wanted to encourage patrons to choose sugar-free options.” His commitment reflects a broader concern for the health of the community.
Dr. Khor noted that the elderly population in the area is growing, with many living alone or in smaller households, which can lead to an increased risk of social isolation. “We want to engage seniors where they feel comfortable—in places they already frequent,” she added. The program seeks to create an environment where seniors can not only enjoy affordable beverages but also forge new friendships.
Concerns about rising living costs were voiced by attendees, such as 69-year-old consultant Steven Tiong, who highlighted that finding coffee for 70 cents was increasingly rare. On the other hand, housewife Asiah Adam, 65, expressed her joy at the discount, saying, “It’s a bonus for my friends and me. We love gathering at the coffee shop every Friday.”
Asiah, who has lived nearby for two decades, explained that this weekly ritual is part of her routine, and she’s open to trying coffee without sugar. “Sometimes I go black, but I’m willing to give it a shot,” she remarked.
This health initiative not only aims to improve the physical well-being of seniors but also addresses the vital need for social interaction among the elderly population. With community spirit and health awareness at the forefront, the 70-cent coffee and tea initiative promises to create a more vibrant and connected environment for Hong Kah North's seniors.
