Co-researcher Kiyoshi Masui added depth to the discussion, explaining, "Around these highly magnetic neutron stars, often referred to as magnetars, atoms cannot sustain themselves—they’re torn apart by the magnetic fields. The exciting revelation here is that the energy within those magnetic fields near the source is twisting and reconfiguring in such a way that it can be released as visible radio waves, detectable even halfway across the Universe."
