SINGAPORE - On November 23, an impressive gathering of around 3,000 People's Action Party (PAP) cadres, activists, and esteemed guests came together to honor Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the party's annual awards dinner. The evening was marked by emotional tributes, including a touching video compilation featuring personal stories from both current and former members of the party.

In a moving speech, PAP chairman Heng Swee Keat praised the outgoing secretary-general for his invaluable contributions to the party over four decades. Lee has served as secretary-general since 2004 and has been a dedicated member of the PAP since 1984, shaping Singapore's political landscape for nearly a generation.

Heng, who also holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized the successful transition of leadership with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong formally stepping into the premiership in May. The baton has been passed successfully for the third time since Singapore gained independence.

“Thank you, secretary-general, for four decades of guidance, wisdom, and foresight,” Heng expressed, acknowledging Lee's remarkable ability to navigate Singapore through significant challenges, including the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under Lee's leadership, Singapore embraced a transformation into a "smart nation" and a key global city, despite geopolitical tensions escalating in recent years. Heng noted that Lee's foresight allowed Singaporean companies and workers to tap into new global economic opportunities, with a steadfast relationship with NTUC (National Trades Union Congress) following these transformative efforts.

In addition to economic initiatives, Lee's focus on social policies has helped to foster a more caring and cohesive society. Programs like SkillsFuture and the Pioneer Generation Package underscore the PAP's commitment to enabling all Singaporeans to achieve their dreams.

During his heartfelt speech that spanned just a minute and a half, Lee expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues and party members for their unwavering support. “Whatever I have done as secretary-general and as PM, I have done with your help and support,” Lee remarked, emphasizing the collective effort that led to their accomplishments.

Looking ahead, he reminded attendees of the importance of hard work as the nation approaches a general election scheduled for next year. “There is a general election coming next year, and we all have to work hard,” he urged, before preparing to deliver a comprehensive speech at the following day's party conference.

A highlight of the evening included a video celebrating Lee’s legacy, featuring clips of former ministers and MPs sharing anecdotes about his dedication to transforming Singapore. Former minister Khaw Boon Wan commented on Lee’s efforts to elevate Singapore’s stature globally.

The video also showcased Lee's compassionate side, with former MP S. Vasoo recounting a time Lee offered him personal encouragement following the passing of his parents.

The night concluded at the Changi Expo, where party members commemorated Lee’s two decades of leadership. They also celebrated the PAP's 70th anniversary by unveiling a special postcard set highlighting 70 pivotal moments in Singapore's history.

As part of the tribute, Heng presented Lee with a watercolor painting depicting him engaging with citizens during a hawker center walkabout—a testament to Lee's commitment to connecting with the community.

Attendees received a unique porcelain cup, inspired by Lee’s famous “magic cup” he uses when delivering multilingual speeches. The cup features illustrations of the four notable PAP leaders throughout history: Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chok Tong, Lee Hsien Loong, and the current Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

As Lee prepares to step down, his legacy as a pivotal figure in Singapore’s recent history is firmly cemented, marking the end of an era for the PAP. The party will gather again on November 24 to elect its new Central Executive Committee and renew its leadership for the next chapter.
