Home Renovation Nightmare in Novena Penthouse
SINGAPORE – In a shocking turn of events, a 46-year-old Novena penthouse owner, only identified as Mr. K, has been left grappling with a half-finished home renovation after shelling out over $152,000. The distressing story highlights the potential pitfalls of hiring unreliable contractors, a nightmare scenario that homeowners dread.
Over a year after he started the renovation, the more than 3,000 sq ft penthouse remains in utter disarray, with construction materials littering the floors and unsightly wires hanging from the walls. The project, which was intended to create a luxurious living environment, has instead resulted in an unfinished eye-sore, complete with uneven flooring and gaping holes in the ceiling.
Mr. K hired Renosaves Project in May 2023, initially impressed by their professional demeanor and even 3D mock-ups that showcased a beautiful design. The renovation was meant to encompass various aspects, including hacking, tiling, electrical and plumbing work, and the installation of a stunning marble feature wall along with an elegant chandelier. Yet, after paying substantial deposits across several months, he is left with incomplete work and an extensive list of grievances.
The original timeline promised by the contractor was to complete the project by September 2024. However, Mr. K noted that everything fell apart when renovations ceased in July. Adding insult to injury, areas such as the balcony now expose him to the elements, with rainwater seeping into the unit due to a missing door.
The contractor has since vanished. Mr. K’s attempts to get in touch have fallen flat, as he has not been able to reach the company since September. He expressed his frustration, stating, "I was looking forward to moving in by the end of this year, but now I'm left scrambling for reputable contractors to complete the renovation and deal with the shoddy work done so far."
The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) has confirmed that Mr. K is not alone in his plight; they have handled three complaints against Renosaves Project this year related to unsatisfactory work and unfinished renovations. In a shocking twist, Mr. K also filed police reports against both Renosaves Project and another firm, Magic Diatom Mud, which was supposed to supply necessary equipment for the renovation. Reports indicate that the police have taken action.
A worker from Renosaves Project revealed that he has also had a rough time, claiming he is owed five months of unpaid overtime as well as a month's salary, amounting to $5,000. He has been unable to contact his employer since September and has been locked out of the company’s office, where all his personal belongings remain.
When contacted, Renosaves Project had their registered address in Northstar @ AMK checked, only to find the unit locked and absent any identifying signage.
As the situation spirals, Mr. K has sought legal advice regarding potential remedies. He expressed concern about the financial repercussions, stating that rectifying the poor workmanship will cost him significantly more.
In such dire circumstances, consumers like Mr. K are urged to file claims with the Small Claims Tribunals, with the value limit set at $20,000, or even up to $30,000 if both parties consent. For more extensive claims, civil court proceedings would be necessary.
Case president Melvin Yong advises that homeowners intending to renovate should opt for contractors accredited by CaseTrust, as this provides a safeguard. Such accredited contractors must adhere to clear schedules and offer protection for consumer deposits in the event of sudden business closures. This year, Case has already received 486 complaints against renovation contractors in the first half alone, highlighting the pressing need for vigilance and accountability in the renovation industry.
As Mr. K navigates through this challenging journey, he remains hopeful that appropriate actions will lead to a resolution. For anyone facing similar contractor issues, the Case hotline is available at 6277 5100, providing support and guidance through the arduous renovation maze.
