SINGAPORE – Warren Sheldon Humphries, a 55-year-old tour guide, battled through a life-altering journey after being diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. This rare hereditary disorder, characterized by progressive muscle loss and sensory issues, first reared its ugly head when he was 47, causing strange walking patterns and weakened grip strength.

At the time, Mr. Humphries was working as a funeral director while navigating the complexities of his second marriage and a daughter from his first union. He initially brushed off his concerning symptoms, attributing them to the stresses of a new job. "I didn’t think much of it," he stated. However, as the months passed, he realized the seriousness of his condition. After being referred to the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and undergoing several tests, he received a flurry of misleading diagnoses, ranging from muscle dystrophy to kidney-related issues.

The Clarity of Diagnosis

It wasn’t until April 2020 that Mr. Humphries finally received clarity—he was diagnosed with CMT, a condition that affects 15 in 100,000 individuals worldwide, predominantly males. Dr. Joy Vijayan, a consultant at NNI, explained how CMT can manifest with symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and unsteady gait, emphasizing the condition's often gradual progression.

Facing Physical and Emotional Struggles

Despite living a seemingly normal life prior to his diagnosis—where activities like taekwondo and swimming filled his days—Mr. Humphries soon found himself facing not only physical struggles but also mounting emotional and financial challenges. After losing his job because of his deteriorating condition, he faced a dreadful spiral; his crippling debts culminated in the end of his second marriage in 2020.

"It's as if my world was crumbling around me," he recalled, discussing the impact of CMT on his mental health. He faced discrimination based on misconceptions about his abilities, leading to feelings of isolation and despair. In a moment of desperation, he thought about ending it all, but a heartfelt phone call from a friend battling stage four breast cancer shifted his perspective.

"She reached out just as I was about to make a irreversible decision," he shared. Their honest conversation sparked a newfound determination in Mr. Humphries. "I realized I needed to face this head-on," he emphasized, vowing to transform his life after such dark moments.

However, the challenges were far from over. In 2024, Mr. Humphries faced another significant setback when he underwent leg amputation due to complications with diabetes. Nonetheless, he reflected on his journey positively: "Interestingly, my disease has fortified me, compelling me to demonstrate that I can emerge stronger from adversity."
