A Rising Star Navigates Expectations and Inspirations

As a native Texan and a follower of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan, guitarist Ian Moore has faced high expectations within blues music. But rather than conforming to the conventional blues sound, Moore has embraced his artistic evolution.

Reflecting on his unique career, Moore says, “It’s just a thing. I know it’s been confusing,” acknowledging how fans have their theories about his musical journey. “I wanted to learn, get better, and catch some beauty.”

Moore burst onto the music scene in 1993 with his self-titled debut album and quickly found himself touring alongside icons like Bob Dylan, ZZ Top, and The Rolling Stones. “Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood were just like two big kids who loved to play the guitar,” Moore recalls, crediting their passion for music as an inspiration even to this day.

Facing Challenges with Grace

Despite the accolades, life hasn't always been easy for Moore. He suffers from laryngeal dystonia, a neurological disorder that hinders his ability to speak, though it hasn’t dulled his musical talent. “I’ve really refocused my energy on playing,” he explains. “There are so many badass guitar players right now, and it’s truly inspiring for me to grow and stretch.”

In a testament to his resilience, Moore collaborates with fellow musicians Jesse Dayton and Johnny Moeller in a new project, the Texas Headhunters, with plans for new music and a tour.

A Harrowing Journey From Violin to Guitar

Moore's journey into music took a dramatic turn in his youth. Following a traumatic incident where he accidentally injured his wrist during an emotional altercation with his mother, he discovered his love for guitar during recovery. “When it came off, I started playing guitar,” he shares, marking a significant turning point in his life.

The Influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan

Growing up in Texas, the shadow of Vaughan loomed large. “When I started doing interviews, all the journalists outside of Austin only knew Stevie’s sound,” Moore noted. He explained how the blues tradition is rooted in the incredible heart that Vaughan brought to his music. “Stevie had a way of incorporating the blues lexicon in ways that honored the tradition,” he states.

Moore fondly recalls that Vaughan once gifted him a guitar, a gesture that remains etched in his memory. “It was a Gibson hollow body I think was an ES-335. He said I could play it until he needed it back,” he reminisces.

The Evolution of Moore's Sound

As his career progressed, Moore migrated from traditional blues, exploring more diverse soundscapes. With his second album, "Modernday Folklore," Moore stayed true to his artistic vision, creating music he felt connected to rather than chasing commercial success.

“I was trying to develop into a deeper player and songwriter,” he shares. “But I think we were just a bit out of step with the times.”

Embracing a Brighter Future

With a renewed focus on his guitar playing, Moore sees his challenges as opportunities for growth. “This has given me a renewed focus on my guitar. I’m not spending as much time singing and writing, so my guitar practice has really ramped up!”

Through his journey, Moore aims to unify through music, particularly in a divisive world. “One of my guiding lights in my music is bringing people together. I’m in that middle ground trying to bring unity through music,” he states.
