Incredible Discovery: Tropical Moths Make a 4,500-Mile Journey to South Wales!

These unusual moths were discovered by 22-year-old ecologist Daisy Cadet and her mother, Ashleigh, during an unexpected winter encounter on their windowsill. Three months prior, the moths were just larvae tucked away in Ashleigh's bag after her trip to Guyana. The incident is being hailed as a biological anomaly that "defies rational explanation," according to scientists.

Once discovered, Daisy quickly realized they weren't your typical UK species. A DNA analysis revealed that they belonged to a completely new species, which has since been named Carmenta brachyclados. This newly identified moth measures about 18mm in length and boasts transparent wings with striking black veins, iridescent blue stripes, and a bright sulphurous yellow underbelly.

Initially, the delicate creatures showed no signs of life due to the cold temperatures in the house. However, the moths managed to thrive inside the warm, humid environment of the boot bag, allowing them to survive Wales's harsh winter climate. Mark Sterling, a scientific associate at the museum, stated, "The chances of two clearwing moths from tropical jungles successfully emerging in South Wales, over three months after they arrived, in the cold Welsh winter, is extraordinary."
