Indonesia Launches Ambitious Free Meal Initiative Set to Benefit Over 82 Million by 2027
JAKARTA: Indonesia is gearing up for a groundbreaking free meal initiative, set to launch its pilot program next month, which aims to provide nutritious meals for around 82.9 million people within its first two years. This ambitious project, championed by President Prabowo Subianto, intends to tackle the pressing issue of malnutrition in the country, a problem that affects millions of Indonesian children.
The program will officially kick off on January 2, 2024, starting with 923 food kitchens that are expected to serve approximately 3 million children in the first three months. By April 2025, the initiative plans to expand to 2,000 kitchens and aims to reach 5,000 kitchens by mid-2025, creating an estimated 1.5 million jobs nationwide.
According to Dadan Hindayana, head of the Indonesian National Nutrition Agency, the program will initially focus on vulnerable groups such as preschoolers, school-aged children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. This reflects a recent decision to broaden the initiative to combat child malnutrition effectively, which is a critical concern considering that approximately 6.3 million children under five are currently impacted by stunting—a condition that can hinder physical and mental development.
The government estimates that providing each meal will cost around 15,000 rupiah (about $0.95), with a significant budget of 71 trillion rupiah allocated for the program in 2025. Notably, the funding will not cover cooked meals but will be utilized for raw ingredients, ensuring that meals adhere to strict nutritional standards set by health authorities.
Local media have reported that each food kitchen will be managed by a nutritionist who will ensure compliance with the necessary dietary guidelines. Additionally, each kitchen is anticipated to employ a diverse team of around 50 workers, tasked with various responsibilities from cooking to delivering meals.
This initiative not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also aims to lay the groundwork for healthier generations in Indonesia. By integrating several sectors into this program, the government hopes to create a robust framework that supports the nutrition and health of millions, while simultaneously boosting the economy through job creation.
As Indonesia prepares to embark on this transformative journey, the success of the free meal initiative could serve as a model for other nations grappling with similar issues of hunger and malnutrition. The world will be watching to see how this ambitious plan unfolds and affects the lives of those in need.
