SINGAPORE: A recent post on a popular complaint group has sparked a heated debate among Singaporeans about food prices. One frustrated customer shared that he paid S$6.50 for a meal consisting of just four chicken strips, raising the question of whether such pricing is acceptable.

The post featured a photo displaying a plastic container filled with rice, a few vegetables, and the scant four strips of chicken. Accompanying the image was a receipt detailing a 'single portion roast chicken thigh rice,' revealing additional items like a signature roast chicken bento at S$8.90 and an iced Thai milk tea priced at S$3.50.

Responses poured in from all corners of the community, with many pinpointing the mall where the particular eatery is situated. One user pointedly remarked, “VivoCity is not Orchard Road. This price is not acceptable. Those who think it’s okay probably don’t visit often. Charging the same amount for less meat is inappropriate.”

Another user, recalling their own past experiences at VivoCity, expressed disbelief: “I used to work in the area, and whenever I bought lunch from this shop, the portions were never that small. It’s just not reasonable. If they don’t react when you show them the photo and receipt, then it’s best to take your business elsewhere.”

A third commenter chimed in, “That’s way overpriced! You can find similar dishes for $4 to $4.50 at many other stalls.” One witty reply cut through the tension with humor: “But look at all those grains of rice! That’s value for your money!”

Food pricing, especially for quick meals at touristy locations like VivoCity, often raises eyebrows among locals. With escalating costs, many Singaporeans are left to question the fairness of such pricing, wondering whether quality and quantity should match the higher rates.
