Celebrating a Milestone of Impact and Innovation
This year, Jay Nolan Community Services proudly commemorates its 50th anniversary, a significant milestone highlighting five decades of unwavering dedication to neurodiverse individuals throughout California. Founded in 1975 by passionate advocates within the Autism Society of Los Angeles, the organization has evolved into a trailblazer in providing individualized support services for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.
A Remarkable Journey of Growth
The journey began with a vision to offer personalized care, and by the 1980s, Jay Nolan Community Services significantly increased awareness about autism through telethons hosted with famed actor Lloyd Nolan, after whom the organization was named in honor of his son. This endeavor not only galvanized community support but also facilitated much-needed funding, fueling the organization’s transition to residential services.
Innovating the Future of Supported Living
Under the transformative leadership of former Executive Director Jeffrey Strully, the organization made history in 1991 by becoming the first in California to transition individuals from traditional residential group homes into independent living environments. This pioneering shift established new benchmarks in support services, prioritizing independence and active community engagement for those with developmental challenges.
Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, the organization expanded its offerings with the implementation of the Circle of Support Service model, ensuring that each participant received 100% individualized services tailored to their specific needs. In 2002, they extended their Supported Living Services to San Jose, and opened further offices in Ridgecrest in 2010, enabling them to reach and serve families in Kern County.
Fostering Inclusive Experiences
A noteworthy initiative, the inaugural Jay Nolan Camp kicked off in 1988, providing an exceptional environment for both neurotypical and neurodiverse children to connect and learn from one another. In addition, by the late 1990s, Jay Nolan's Supported Employment services received accreditation from CARF International, underscoring the organization's commitment to quality and performance excellence.
In 2018, Jay Nolan Community Services took another leap forward by collaborating with the Uniquely Abled Project to launch the Uniquely Abled Academy in Santa Clarita, California. This program aims to bridge the gap for neurodiverse individuals seeking gainful employment, empowering them to thrive in the workforce. The organization’s resilience was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 as it ensured the continuation of its vital support services without interruption.
A Vision for the Future
As it celebrates this monumental 50th anniversary, Jay Nolan Community Services remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals with developmental disabilities. Current CEO Edward Amey has shared the organization’s commitment to providing essential accommodations and support for Spanish-speaking, Korean-speaking, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. The expansion efforts continue with new offices launched in Salinas, Tehachapi, Bakersfield, and Lake Isabella in 2023 and 2024.
