In an inspiring and poignant twist of fate, 31-year-old graphic designer Mr. Pow Jun Yang has turned his dream of showcasing his art into a heartbreaking reality, as he faces the grim prognosis of terminal cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4 urachal cancer earlier this year, he has been given a mere few months to live, pushing him to prioritize his lifelong aspiration.
After exhausting treatment options, including multiple chemotherapy cycles, Mr. Pow received the devastating news from doctors in November 2023, sparking what he referred to as a “living funeral” – a chance to celebrate his life while still here. His experiences and the urgency to face his mortality led to the creation of *Canvas of Memories – Jun Yang Pow*, an art exhibition held at Suntec City from January 3 to 5, 2024.
His sister reached out to Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS), a charity that specializes in fulfilling the last wishes of terminally ill patients. The organization quickly enlisted partners and sponsors, facilitating the realization of Mr. Pow’s exhibition in less than a month. Featuring 56 pieces of art, the showcase includes digital illustrations and photographs inspired by his travels and his distinctive blue and white series, influenced by traditional ink-wash techniques reminiscent of Singapore’s cultural heritage.
Mr. Pow shared a sentimental perspective, stating, “I enjoy showing my art to my peers and gathering my family, friends, and colleagues for this exhibition. It feels like my last chance to create beauty in my life.” His intention is clear – to not only reflect on his passion but to spread joy, hoping to raise funds for Art Outreach, an organization dedicated to promoting art appreciation in Singapore.
AWS, which has granted over 300 wishes since its inception in 2019, highlights the emotional impact these experiences have on terminally ill patients and their families. They facilitate memorable gatherings and special experiences, such as arranging a yacht cruise for a man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and ensuring a bedridden father attended his daughter’s wedding, capturing invaluable moments that families will cherish forever.
At the exhibition, the presence of esteemed guests, including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife, signifies the wide-reaching recognition of Mr. Pow's courage and talent. Sharing his journey, he emphasized the importance of valuing time and pursuing passions, no matter how small they may seem.
Visitors to the exhibition, free to the public, can witness the depth of Mr. Pow’s artistry and reflect on the preciousness of life during its exhibition hours from 11 AM to 8 PM. This heartfelt initiative not only showcases talent but serves as a stirring reminder of the beauty that can emerge from tragedy, urging us all to live fully and embrace our passions before it’s too late.
As Mr. Pow continues to show immense bravery in the face of adversity, he leaves us with a lasting message – “Savor your time, discover your passions, and pursue them relentlessly.”
