In a thrilling showdown that left spectators on the edge of their seats, Singapore's powerhouse, Loh Kean Yew, triumphed over China's top-ranked Shi Yuqi to secure his place in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Championships. This remarkable victory not only marked one of the biggest wins of Loh's career but also showcased his resilience and tactical prowess.

The match at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium ended with a nail-biting score of 21-19, 13-21, 21-16, which was Loh's first win against a world No. 1 since he defeated Viktor Axelsen in the 2022 Denmark Open quarter-finals.

Reflecting on his match, a determined Loh, 27, admitted, "I lost my focus in the second game, but I managed to regain it in the final game and stick to my game plan." His journey does not get any easier, as he is set to clash with his arch-rival, Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, the reigning world champion.

Kunlavut earned his semi-final berth by edging out Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, solidifying his reputation as a formidable opponent. Loh has faced Kunlavut six times since their last encounter over a decade ago, with the Singaporean yet to secure a win over him.

"I'm thrilled to win and reach the semi-final, but the job’s not done yet," Loh expressed, emphasizing the need to maintain focus ahead of his tough match against Kunlavut. "I'll give it my all and hope for the best!"

Loh's triumph over Shi was no easy feat, especially after losing to him in the All England Open quarter-finals previously. However, he made a strong start, pulling ahead with powerful smashes that clinched him the first game.

The second game saw Shi dominate, creating a commanding lead, but Loh's tenacity shone through in the final game as he unleashed an impressive 8-point streak early on, ultimately sealing the match.

On the coaching front, national singles coach Kim Ji-hyun praised Loh's performance, noting the strategic adjustments made to secure the win, particularly in the pressure-filled deciding game.

As Loh stands as Singapore's last hope at the continental championships, he aims to build on this momentum and vie for another final after his recent runner-up finish at the German Open.

In other semi-final matchups, the competition heats up as Chinese players Li Shifeng and Lu Guangzu prepare to face off. Meanwhile, the women’s semi-finals promise excitement too, with a fierce all-China clash between Gao Fangjie and Han Yue.

Hold on tight as this year's Badminton Asia Championships unfolds with gripping matches and stellar performances!
