Excitement is in the air as rumors swirl about the Google Pixel 10's upcoming powerhouse, the Tensor G5 chip. Speculation has long suggested a potential collaboration with Imagination Technologies for its GPU, and new insights from a recent industry event have lent further credibility to this possibility.
Last month, at the RISC-V Day Tokyo conference, a fascinating blog post by Yang Yanling, a postgraduate student, explored the integration of RISC-V technology with Imagination’s cutting-edge GPUs. The prominence of this post was solidified when Imagination Technologies shared it on WeChat, indicating the company’s confidence in the material. Notably, the blog included a table listing various chips equipped with Imagination GPUs, among which the Tensor G5 was highlighted – a detail that has since been removed, adding an air of mystery to the whole affair.
The Tensor G5 is shaping up to be a revolutionary chip. Reports suggest that it will utilize the DXT-48-1536 GPU, moving away from the Arm Mali-G715 found in previous Tensor chips (G3 and G4). What sets the DXT-48-1536 apart is its capability for modern graphics innovations, including ray tracing, which promises to elevate gaming and graphical experiences on the future Pixel devices.
In a significant shift, Google is expected to have TSMC fabricate the Tensor G5 — a departure from Samsung’s production that has been customary for prior models. This chip will run on a 3nm-class node, signaling a leap forward in efficiency and performance. It will incorporate Arm Cortex CPU cores, along with a fully custom image signal processor (ISP) that outstrips the partial custom designs seen in its predecessors, which used a hybrid of Samsung and Google technologies.
Moreover, the Tensor G5 will boast advanced features such as a bespoke memory controller, an enhanced system-level cache, and optimized power modules for better performance. Comprehensive integration with third-party components for USB, PCIe, and DSI interfaces is also part of the strategy, alongside support for flash storage and LPDDR5x memory.
Adding to the intrigue, the same table that referenced the Tensor G5 also hinted at a yet-to-be-revealed custom chipset by Xiaomi, known as XuanJie, which is reportedly also leveraging Imagination Technologies GPUs.
As anticipation builds for this technological marvel, the Google Pixel 10 promises not only to make a mark with its advanced Tensor G5 chip but also represents a strategic collaboration that could redefine mobile gaming and multimedia experiences. Keep an eye on Google's developments — the future is looking graphically stunning!
