Introduction
Exciting news for commuters! The highly anticipated Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) is set to kick off its rail system installation by the end of this year.
Infrastructure Development
This crucial phase will involve the expansive laying of tracks along with the installation of vital infrastructure such as signaling, communications, integrated supervisory control, and traction power systems. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the long-awaited cross-border transit link that will connect Singapore and Malaysia, as confirmed in a joint statement from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), Malaysia’s Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), and RTS Operations (RTSO).
Civil Works Progress
Since the ceremonial connection event held on January 11 of this year, there has been robust progress on the civil infrastructure necessary for the RTS. This includes crucial components like stations, tunnels, viaducts, and depots that are necessary for the smooth functioning of the transit system.
On the Singapore side, astonishingly, over 80% of the civil works have already been completed! Remarkably, the sea and land viaducts are nearing their final stages. The remaining tasks include completing roadworks, installing essential electrical and maintenance systems, and constructing critical customs facilities that will facilitate seamless border crossing.
Integration with Existing Systems
The RTS will integrate with the Woodlands North MRT Station, which is part of Singapore’s existing Thomson-East Coast MRT Line. This integration, set to begin in the upcoming year, is expected to greatly streamline passenger transfers between the new system and the existing rail network, providing a smooth commuting experience.
Progress in Malaysia
On the Malaysian front, progress is equally impressive, with approximately 93% of the necessary infrastructure already completed. RTS Operations (RTSO) commenced track laying work on September 30 and will assume responsibility for the remaining infrastructure tasks by the end of this year.
Milestone Unveiling
To commemorate a key milestone in the RTS development, a striking symbolic structure was unveiled at the junction of the sea viaduct. This landmark features a unique handshake design, signifying the strong collaborative partnership between Singapore and Malaysia in bringing the RTS vision to fruition.
Conclusion
With both nations working in tandem and progress being made at a rapid pace, commuters can look forward to a new era of efficient transport between Singapore and Malaysia. The RTS promises to not only enhance convenience but also foster greater connectivity and economic collaboration in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking project!
