JOHOR BAHRU - A New Notification System for Traffic Issues
In a significant development for vehicle owners traveling from Singapore to Malaysia, those who have registered for Malaysia’s Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) will now receive timely notifications regarding any outstanding traffic tickets as they approach the two major land checkpoints in Johor.
How the Notification System Works
This new initiative employs Variable Message Signage (VMS) systems to alert VEP users of any pending citations issued by the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) or police. According to a JPJ official, this strategy aims to encourage foreign-registered vehicle drivers to clear their outstanding summonses, which have accumulated to a staggering amount over the years.
Impact of the System
“There are hundreds of thousands of ringgit in outstanding payments that need to be addressed,” said the official. Since implementing this system, over 20,000 vehicles from Singapore have undergone checks, with hundreds of reminders sent to vehicle owners urging them to resolve their outstanding debts.
Growing Number of VEP Registrations
Currently, more than 150,000 people have successfully registered for the VEP, and this number continues to grow rapidly, attracting about 1,000 new applicants each day. While Singapore-registered vehicles are still allowed entry into Johor without having the VEP, warnings will be issued to those who have not completed the registration process.
VEP Registration Centers
For convenience, there are three VEP centers located in Johor: Danga Bay, Iskandar Puteri, and Paradigm Mall. Additionally, there is a center available in Woodlands, Singapore. A member of the Singapore National Private Hire Vehicle Association has expressed hopes for the establishment of another one-stop center in Singapore. This would streamline the application and installation process for RFID tags, which are essential for VEP compliance.
Concerns About Exploitation
Unfortunately, the long queues at existing centers have led to opportunistic workshops charging between $100 and $150 for assistance with VEP application and installation. This has raised concerns about potential exploitation of drivers in need of expedited service.
A Call for Better Services
One official emphasized, “The demand for a dedicated one-stop center in Singapore is clear. It should provide both application and installation services to ease the burden on travelers.”
Conclusion
Stay informed and keep those summonses in check to avoid unexpected costs on your next trip to Johor!
