VIENTIANE, Oct 10 — In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Malaysia and Singapore have reached an agreement on several outstanding issues that have historically strained their relationship. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this exciting development following a pivotal bilateral meeting with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the ongoing 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

While Anwar did not disclose the specific issues that were addressed, he highlighted the commitment from both sides to tackle these topics further during the upcoming annual Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat later this year. This strategy underscores an increasing willingness from both nations to forge a path toward resolution and collaboration.

“For almost 40 minutes, PM Lawrence and I delved into various matters of mutual concern, focusing on the most effective and timely solutions,” Anwar stated, reflecting on the productive discussions that took place. Following their tête-à-tête, the two leaders orchestrated a broader bilateral meeting, engaging ministers and delegations from both countries to ensure a unified approach moving forward.

Among the principal issues previously noted between Malaysia and Singapore are airspace control disputes, regional water supply agreements, and maritime border delimitations. As the ASEAN Summits continue until October 11, Laos, currently serving as the ASEAN chairman, is set to pass the baton to Malaysia, which will formally assume the role on January 1, 2025.
