Introduction

In a decision that has sparked outrage among some Malaysians, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced that starting October 10, users will be required to log into the MyJPJ app using the MyDigital ID national identification system. This app is essential for viewing and renewing driver’s licenses, road taxes, and vehicle ownership certificates.

What is MyDigital ID?

The MyDigital ID functions similarly to Singapore’s Singpass identification system, serving as a single-sign on service designed to streamline access to multiple digital platforms. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was the first to register for the system on December 1 of last year, and by July 10, about 466,000 Malaysians, including civil servants, had signed up. The mobile app for MyDigital ID became available in August 2023.

Issues Raised

This marks a significant move as the JPJ is the first Malaysian governmental agency to mandate the use of MyDigital ID for accessing its services, according to Malay Mail. However, this sudden transition has raised concerns, particularly among less tech-savvy citizens, who feel the nine-day notice for implementation is insufficient for such a significant change.

Public Reaction

Critics have voiced worries about cybersecurity risks, questioning why JPJ could not make the MyDigital ID optional rather than compulsory. Many users have reported technical difficulties with the MyDigital ID application, claiming it often freezes or experiences lag. Comments flooded social media, with users like Daniel Wang expressing frustration stating, “Been doing it for (two) days and every time end up with server time out.” Another user, Kp Fong, urged, “Please rectify the problem before ‘forcing’ us to use it.”

Future Plans

The MyDigital ID aims to become the go-to verification system for various applications and services within Malaysia. The organization behind these efforts, MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd, has indicated plans to integrate this platform with more government services in the future. It operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's Mimos Berhad.

Conclusion

As Malaysia progresses towards digital governance, citizens are left to wonder if the benefits of such streamlined access are worth the growing pains and frustrations associated with digital implementation.
