In a crucial diplomatic move, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet Myanmar's junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, in Bangkok this week. The meeting, set for April 17, is focused on extending a ceasefire between the military government and various rebel factions to aid in earthquake relief efforts.

As chair of the ASEAN bloc this year, Anwar is emphasizing humanitarian grounds for the discussion, highlighting the lack of formal engagements between Myanmar and ASEAN. This comes in the wake of a devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar last month, resulting in thousands of casualties and extensive damage.

"I appreciate General Min Aung Hlaing's positive response to our outreach. During our upcoming meeting, my priority will be to advocate for the extension of the ceasefire," Anwar mentioned on Monday.

Since the military coup in early 2021, Myanmar has been embroiled in turmoil, escalating into a civil war. Although both the junta and rebel forces have declared unilateral ceasefires to facilitate quake relief, accusations of violations from both sides linger.

ASEAN is pressing for the implementation of its five-point peace plan to restore stability and has restricted the junta leaders from participating in its meetings due to their non-compliance.

To support the disaster-stricken areas, Malaysia will provide humanitarian assistance through a temporary field hospital established by the Malaysian Armed Forces.

In addition to discussions with Hlaing, Anwar will meet with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to address collaborative efforts, including the cleaning and deepening of Sungai Golok, a river that runs along the Malaysia-Thailand border.
