TOKYO, Japan – Max Verstappen has hinted at a potential future collaboration with Honda as the current successful partnership between the Japanese engine manufacturer and Red Bull Racing comes to an end at the conclusion of the Formula One season.
The 27-year-old Dutch driver has enjoyed immense success with Honda power, securing four consecutive world championships with Red Bull. However, starting in 2026, Honda engines will be used by Aston Martin, leading to speculation about who Verstappen might drive for in the future.
During a recent Formula One fan event held by Honda in Tokyo, ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Honda's commitment and support. He drove the RB16B, the car that marked his first world title victory, around the streets of Tokyo, creating a nostalgic moment for fans.
“It’s been a ride that I enjoyed a lot,” Verstappen shared with excitement. “Before we began working together, we had our own success, but I could have never imagined the heights we would reach, winning four championships together. This weekend is about celebrating what we have achieved and perhaps looking towards future possibilities.”
Verstappen’s words have ignited speculation regarding his long-term future with Red Bull, where he has a contract lasting until 2028. Reports indicate that his contract includes performance-related exit clauses, which could allow him to explore other options should Red Bull's competitiveness falter.
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya weighed in on the situation, suggesting Aston Martin might present an irresistible offer. He noted that the team has already secured the talents of renowned designer Adrian Newey from Red Bull, making the prospect of a move to Aston Martin particularly appealing for Verstappen. “If I were Max, I would definitely consider Aston Martin,” Montoya stated. “Given the resources they are assembling, including Adrian and Honda, it would be a logical option.”
As fans cheer Verstappen on in Japan, Red Bull Racing has unveiled a special red and white livery for their cars this weekend, commemorating the final chapter of their collaboration with Honda.
The question remains: will Max Verstappen's journey with Honda truly end, or could this separation only be a brief intermission before future opportunities arise? The upcoming races and his performance will surely influence how the 2024 season unfolds for this racing prodigy. Stay tuned!
