Maximilian Maeder's Remarkable Year: From Bronze to World Champion!

2024-10-06

SINGAPORE – Maximilian Maeder, Singapore's young kitefoiling prodigy, has emerged victorious in what he deems "one of the most outstanding years" of his career.

After a whirlwind eight months on the competition circuit that saw him collect an impressive eight titles and secure a bronze medal at the Olympics, Maeder further solidified his phenomenal 2024 season by clinching the overall title at the KiteFoil World Series on October 5.

The 18-year-old masterclass kitefoiler began his exceptional run by winning the first leg of the series in Austria just a month prior.

As the reigning champion from 2023, Maeder showcased his prowess by only requiring one race to capture gold at the beautiful Poetto beach in Cagliari. In a thrilling final day of the opening series on October 4, five different kiters took home wins across six races, highlighting the competitive landscape of the sport.

Commenting on the day’s events, Maeder expressed, "Having all the fresh perspective and potential gives you a push of motivation, especially on the last day of qualifying.

It’s exciting to witness how much new talent is emerging in this sport.” The increased competitiveness, he noted, marks a substantial development since he began kitefoiling eight years ago, with anticipation building for the sport's debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Maeder's journey in kitefoiling is driven by a desire to compete and constantly evolve his skills.

“It’s about being able to improve and overcome challenges,” he said. “While facing these challenges can be tough at times, the real joy comes from conquering them.”

In Italy, Maeder secured his place in the grand final, finishing the opening series as the leader with 16 points—two over his closest rival, Frenchman Axel Mazella.

By the time the semi-finals concluded, Maeder and two other competitors—Switzerland's Gian Stragiotti and Britain’s Connor Bainbridge—clinch their slots for the ultimate showdown.

As the top qualifier entering the grand final, Maeder was armed with a two-point advantage and wasted no time, achieving a win in the first race, bringing him one step closer to the title.

This victory marked his third consecutive title, an impressive feat following his Olympic bronze and recent triumphs at the Austrian Championships and Formula Kite Asian Championships in Daishan, China.

Even though Maeder finished fourth in the grand final's decisive race, Mazella managed to secure the silver medal, having entered with one match point, while Stragiotti claimed bronze over Bainbridge with a strong second-place finish.

In the women's category, France’s Jessie Kampman also had a stellar event, taking home the overall title after winning both legs of the world series.

With the competition intensifying, Maeder and his fellow kiters have demonstrated that camaraderie still thrives in the sport.

During the regatta's opening day, Maeder and Mazella notably slowed down in the race's final stretch, allowing fellow competitors an opportunity to finish, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship that exists amidst fierce competition.

As the kitefoiling community gears up for what lies ahead, all eyes are set on the Paris Olympics, where Maeder and others will continue to push the boundaries of this exhilarating sport.
