SINGAPORE: In a significant political shift ahead of the upcoming General Election, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has announced that shipping lawyer Gho Sze Kee, 46, will be the new candidate for Mountbatten Single Member Constituency (SMC). This announcement, made on April 20, comes as four-term MP Lim Biow Chuan steps down after nearly two decades of public service.

Mr. Lim has been a notable figure in Singapore's political landscape, first entering the arena nearly 20 years ago as part of the PAP slate for Marine Parade GRC during the 2006 elections. Following Mountbatten's reconfiguration into an SMC in 2011, he was re-elected multiple times, achieving a remarkable 73.82% of the votes in the last election against a first-time opponent.

Lim's decision to retire ushers in a new era for the constituency, as Gho Sze Kee steps up to the plate. Currently serving as an associate director at AsiaLegal, a law firm based in Singapore specializing in maritime issues, Gho is no stranger to public service or community engagement.

A Community Advocate and Activist

Gho has dedicated the past 13 years to community leadership and activism, working closely with Lim to address residents’ needs and aspirations. Her commitment has been evident through her participation in various initiatives, including Edusave Award ceremonies and festive celebrations. In 2023, Gho’s contributions to the community earned her the prestigious Public Service Medal as vice-chairperson of the Bukit Timah Citizens’ Consultative Committee.

Gho made headlines in 2021 with her impactful speech at the PAP party convention, advocating for the importance of diversity and renewal within the party. Her fervor and dedication have etched her as a prominent figure in local politics.

Big Shoes to Fill

Reflecting on her new role, Gho acknowledged the immense legacy left by Mr. Lim. "He has built solid foundations in Mountbatten, and I recognize the responsibility ahead of me. I promise to listen attentively to the residents and be present in their lives," she stated.

Gho aims to continue Lim’s legacy of strong community ties and responsive governance, emphasizing her desire to be a first point of contact for residents in times of need, drawing on her experiences as a mother.
