The Founder: Shiyun Lin

Founded by Shiyun Lin, a passionate arts advocate, the TTKC provides a nurturing environment for children facing difficult family situations, ensuring they have a safe space to learn, play, and grow. This initiative operates under 3Pumpkins, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to serving the local community.

Lin, 42, embodies the spirit of compassion and creativity. With an extensive background in theatre and youth arts production, she has always been driven by a desire to uplift children. "These kids were always on my mind," she shares, reflecting on her past work with indigenous communities in Indonesia. "I wanted to give them opportunities to engage with their cultural heritage."

A Calling to Help

In 2016, as she shifted from her role as an arts producer, Lin felt an undeniable calling to support underprivileged children in Singapore. Immersing herself in the lives of families living in rental flats, she conducted an informal study of their needs. Over three years, she spent time with single mothers and their kids, observing the struggles faced by three critical groups: those from rental homes, children without stable caregivers, and those facing mental health challenges.

"They were stuck between feeling unsafe at home and school," Lin explains. "I wanted to create a ‘good gang’ to offer them belonging and security." This vision led to the establishment of a welcoming community at local playgrounds.

In 2019, recognizing the need for a permanent space, Lin expanded her idea further. Influenced by a childhood animation and her son's love for pumpkins, she established 3Pumpkins. The first venue was a small rented area in Lengkok Bahru, where she quickly gained the interest of families in the community, proving the need for such a safe haven.

Shortly afterward, she secured a laundromat location in Boon Lay, dubbing the initiative Tak Takut Kids Club—literally meaning "not afraid" in Malay. Lin wanted to inspire bravery and resilience in the children who came through her doors.

Accessibility of the Arts

"I strive to ensure that the arts are accessible to all children, not just those from affluent backgrounds," she stated passionately. This focus on inclusivity continued even amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, as she advocated for the necessity of a physical space for children's development.

Growth and Community Impact

Through the support of government initiatives and community fundraising, TTKC blossomed, broadening its reach to over 200 children. There's a palpable sense of ownership and creativity inside the center, where kids are encouraged to contribute ideas and take responsibility for their environment. "They've found a home here," Lin says, beaming with pride.

With a dedicated staff team of 12 and numerous volunteers, the club opens its doors to children from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, with additional hours on weekends.
