In a surprising announcement, Dr. Maliki Osman, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed his decision to retire from politics, signaling the end of a distinguished 24-year career ahead of the 2025 General Election.

On April 21, through heartfelt messages on social media, Dr. Maliki expressed his commitment to the rejuvenation of the People's Action Party (PAP), which he noted intentionally brings in fresh talent during elections to inject younger and more diverse perspectives into Parliament. After five successful terms since 2001, he and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong determined it was time for new leadership.

"My immediate priority is to ensure a smooth transition and rally support for the East Coast GRC team in the coming election. I am confident they will serve residents well,” said Dr. Maliki, who currently represents a five-member constituency.

Dr. Maliki, aged 59, has introduced his successor, Madam Hazlina Abdul Halim, the former chief executive of Make-A-Wish Singapore, to lead the East Coast GRC.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Maliki remarked, "Serving residents in Sembawang GRC and East Coast GRC, as well as my role as mayor of South East CDC, has been a profoundly enriching and humbling journey.” He extended his gratitude to Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong for trusting him with political responsibilities since 2004, emphasizing the privilege of working with senior leaders to overcome challenges and contribute to Singapore’s growth.

Dr. Maliki also expressed appreciation for the grassroots and community leaders he collaborated with, particularly in uplifting lives through various social programs. "Thank you, dear residents, for welcoming me into your homes and lives over the past 24 years. I will forever cherish our shared memories," he added.

With a PhD in social work from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Maliki transitioned into politics in 2001 at the age of 36. He made his mark as part of a six-member team that won Sembawang GRC that same year.

His political journey included serving as parliamentary secretary for different ministries and overseeing major projects, such as the redevelopment of Geylang Serai. He played a pivotal role in community improvement initiatives and was instrumental in addressing food security and development within Singapore.

In a demonstration of his diplomatic efforts, Dr. Maliki represented Singapore at a 2024 ministerial conference in Egypt regarding the Gaza crisis, advocating for humanitarian support and affirming Singapore's commitment to strengthening ties with the Palestinian Authority.

Elevated to Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, as well as serving as Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs, Dr. Maliki has shown a remarkable ability to connect with diverse communities, speaking Mandarin and Hokkien fluently.

Outside politics, Dr. Maliki's talents extend to music; he has played both the guitar and guzheng at various events, blending culture and advocacy throughout his career.

As he steps back from the political arena, Dr. Maliki’s dedication and passion for service will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in Singapore.
