SINGAPORE – MRT Service Disruption

As train services between Tampines and Tanah Merah stations were suspended for essential construction work, many commuters experienced some confusion, despite extensive notifications on social media, at MRT stations, and on trains.

This suspension, which kicked off on December 7 and is set to last until December 10, is necessary for connecting the East-West Line (EWL) to the new East Coast Integrated Depot located at Upper Changi Road East.

Alternative Travel Options

Although the partial service disruption could have resulted in chaos, most passengers seemed unfazed by the adjustments.

The quieter morning commute saw many choosing alternative routes smoothly, notably during peak hours, thanks to the deployment of shuttle trains and bus services to facilitate their journeys.

Shuttle Services in Place

For the duration of the suspension, shuttle trains running every five minutes between Tampines and Pasir Ris stations, eight minutes between Tanah Merah and Expo stations, and 11 minutes between Expo and Changi Airport, are in place.

Additionally, a dedicated shuttle bus service named Shuttle 7 will operate every three to five minutes at key points, maintaining the standard MRT fare for passengers.

Queue Management and Facilities

At the designated bus stops in Tampines, Simei, and Tanah Merah, orderly queuing systems have been established, complete with metal barricades.

Sheltered waiting areas and priority boarding zones for seniors and passengers with mobility aids have also been created to enhance convenience.

Operational Support

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has confirmed that up to 55 double-decker buses will be utilized each day to meet passenger demand.

To mitigate any potential confusion, SMRT staff and additional personnel in high-visibility vests were on-site to assist commuters.

Challenges Faced

However, not all experiences were hassle-free.

Some travellers, unfamiliar with the service changes, encountered unexpected challenges.

For instance, Ms. Yuki Teo, arriving from Malaysia, initially navigated her way incorrectly and had to retrace her journey back to the airport.

Others, like Ms. Junaidah Abdul Rahman, were caught off-guard due to a lack of signage at their usual stations, leading to delays and added transport costs.

Collaboration for Smooth Operation

The significant operational changes reflect SMRT's proactive approach in collaborating with LTA, as they prepared for this large-scale infrastructure project.

This includes deploying five times the workforce typically assigned and offering extra logistical support to ensure smooth passenger flow.

Future Developments

More extensive infrastructure work is also on the horizon.

The LTA has reported that approximately 100,000 passengers, on average, may experience travel delays of 20 to 30 minutes each day during the suspension.

With construction planning set to continue in 2025 and 2026, the MRT network is expected to see more service interruptions as the infrastructure expands.
