NASA Astronaut Captures Stunning Aurora from Space – You Won't Believe the View!

NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick has taken astrophotography to extraordinary new heights, quite literally, aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Dominick is currently aboard the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft, which he used to reach the ISS as part of the SpaceX Crew-8 mission back in March. Although he is set to return to Earth soon, the Crew-8 mission's homecoming has been postponed due to the impending threats of Hurricane Milton, an event Dominick is also keen to document.

On October 7, he posted an emotional message on X, reflecting on the beauty surrounding him while missing his loved ones: “This is the view out the window this evening… I miss my family and friends but we would have missed today's insane aurora if we had undocked today,” he tweeted, perfectly capturing the unique balance of duty and longing that astronauts experience.

The powerful Hurricane Milton became another focal point in Dominick's photographic repertoire. On October 8, he shared a chilling image of the storm from his viewport, a reminder of the intense forces impacting our planet. From his vantage point aboard the ISS, Dominick has the chance to see 16 sunrises and sunsets each day, offering a lens through which he can appreciate the stark contrast of natural phenomena.

In his quest for the perfect shot, Dominick explained that they captured thousands of images to fine-tune the settings for lighting and framing during multiple orbital nights, creating time-lapse footage of the auroras that resulted from recent heightened solar activity. The sun, currently in a high-energy phase, has been emitting flares and coronal mass ejections that provoke these enchanting light shows.
