Exciting News: New MRT Station Near Yew Tee Village Set to Transform Travel in Singapore by 2035!
SINGAPORE - Major upgrades to Singapore’s transport infrastructure are on the horizon, as a brand-new underground MRT station is set to be constructed near Yew Tee Village. This station will be a key part of the extended Downtown Line (DTL), which will stretch from Bukit Panjang to Sungei Kadut, significantly enhancing connectivity for residents in the area.
Upon completion, which is projected for 2035, the new MRT line will slash travel time to bustling downtown hotspots such as Chinatown by 20 minutes. The 4-kilometer DTL extension will also incorporate a vital interchange at Sungei Kadut Central that links to the North-South Line (NSL), revolutionizing public transport in the region.
Construction of this promising infrastructure is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, as announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The DTL extension will include two significant new stations: the first, codenamed DE1, will be located at Sungei Kadut Avenue, providing access to nearby facilities including Yew Tee Village, Pang Sua Fishing Deck, and Pang Sua Park Connector via a newly planned pedestrian bridge. Yew Tee Village, primarily a housing estate located around Choa Chu Kang Drive and Choa Chu Kang Crescent, will see much-improved links thanks to these developments.
Additionally, a dual two-lane vehicular bridge will connect the new MRT station to Choa Chu Kang North 7 and Woodlands Road, enhancing accessibility with covered walkways and cycling paths being built for first- and last-mile connectivity.
Moving further north, the station in Sungei Kadut Central, codenamed DE2, will serve as the DTL’s new terminus. Nestled underground, it will also align with a new above-ground NSL station, NS6, located strategically between the current Yew Tee and Kranji stations.
The larger vision for this area includes the development of the Sungei Kadut Eco-District, a sprawling 500-hectare industrial estate driven by JTC Corporation. This eco-district is part of long-term plans by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to modernize one of Singapore's enduring industrial landscapes, gearing up for future industries like agri-tech and environmental technology.
In terms of environmental impact, a thorough study has been conducted to ensure minimal disruption to local wildlife and biodiversity. Even though some construction noise and vibrations might affect local fauna, strategies such as wildlife passageways and noise barriers are set to be put in place, assuring the sustainability of this ambitious project.
The DTL extension is expected not only to improve transport resilience in north-western Singapore but also to ease congestion and provide alternative routes for commuters. With the MRT network expanding to 39 stations over 44 kilometers upon its completion, including other forthcoming stations like Hume, Xilin, and Sungei Bedok, local residents can look forward to a vastly interconnected transit system.
The initiatives driven by the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 aim to ensure that nine out of ten peak-period journeys can be completed in under 45 minutes via public transport. As the thriving area of Sungei Kadut continues to evolve, the upcoming MRT projects symbolize a significant leap towards a sustainable and well-connected future for all in Singapore.
