Exciting news for aspiring pilots! The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) has officially launched an innovative university program that allows students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a commercial pilot license within just four years — a significant reduction from the traditional six years needed to complete these two objectives separately.

On October 8, during the SUSS graduation ceremony, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing highlighted how this integrated pathway aligns with the growing demand for skilled pilots in the aviation industry. "This program encourages lifelong learning, enabling individuals to work and upgrade their qualifications concurrently — showing that both endeavors can complement each other," Mr. Chan stated.

Developed in partnership with Singapore Flying College, this part-time undergraduate program is set to commence in July 2025 and will initially accommodate 25 ambitious students. Graduates of the program will earn a bachelor's degree in their chosen major alongside a commercially recognized pilot license issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore.

Under this groundbreaking initiative, students can select from various SUSS majors including business analytics, finance, human resource management, information and communication technology, logistics and supply chain management, marketing, public safety and security, and psychology. These fields were specifically chosen based on the Skills Framework for Air Transport by SkillsFuture Singapore, which identifies essential skills for pilots.

In order to qualify for the commercial license, students will also need to pass a flight test, ensuring they are well-prepared for a professional flying career upon graduation.

Applications for the program opened on October 8 and will remain open until March 2025 — a perfect opportunity for those who dream of soaring through the skies as professional pilots while also obtaining a valuable educational qualification.

A Record-Breaking Graduation

In other news, SUSS celebrated its largest graduating cohort ever, with over 3,200 students receiving their degrees on October 8 and 9 at the Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre — a 9% increase from last year's numbers. Among the graduates are the first cohort from the Bachelor of Public Safety and Security program and several master’s students specializing in built environment and digital marketing.

Notably, 70-year-old Jeffrey Yan, who is graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies, shared his insights on returning to academia. After nearly 50 years in various industries, Mr. Yan embraced the challenge of learning something new. Despite being called "uncle" by younger classmates, he actively participated in classes and group projects, drawing on his experience and passion for education.

Mr. Yan faced various challenges during his studies, particularly when adapting to remote learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. With help from his 30-year-old son, he learned essential skills like video editing and online presentations.

He encourages others, regardless of age, to pursue education: "There’s nothing to fear about going back to school. Embrace the experience, and remember that it’s all about gaining knowledge!"

As Singapore continues its commitment to education and professional development, the new pilot program at SUSS is poised to inspire the next generation of aviators while providing pathways for lifelong learning. Grab your chance to elevate your career today! ✈️
