NRO Expands Spy Satellite Network with Record-Setting SpaceX Launches

WASHINGTON — In a significant boost to national security, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched the classified NROL-69 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) on March 24. This launch marks a pivotal moment as the NRO embarks on an ambitious journey to establish the largest satellite network ever created by the U.S. government.

Launching from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 1:48 p.m. Eastern, the NROL-69 mission represents not only the first National Security Space Launch (NSSL) of 2025 but also the inaugural NRO mission under SpaceX’s NSSL Phase 2 contract, awarded by the U.S. Space Force in August 2020.

This historic launch comes just days after the successful deployment of the NROL-57 mission, which took off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on March 21 at 2:49 a.m. Eastern. The NROL-57 launch marked the eighth mission supporting the NRO’s revolutionary proliferated architecture of small satellites, further solidifying the agency's commitment to enhancing U.S. intelligence capabilities.

A spokesperson for the NRO stated, "Over the past two years, our agency has successfully launched more than 150 satellites, creating the largest and most capable government constellation in our nation’s history." Approximately half of these upcoming launches aim to expand the NRO’s proliferated architecture, with further deployments scheduled through 2029.
